This SEO checklist is the one we use as the backbone of our own audits at SEO-Malta, simplified so business owners and marketers can use it. Each section links to a deeper guide. If you only have an hour, do sections 1 and 2: setup and technical problems stop good content from ranking at all.

1. Setup and Tracking

  • Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools (see our Bing SEO guide).
  • Install analytics and record conversions – enquiries, calls, bookings or sales – not just visits (SEO analytics).
  • Submit an XML sitemap and check it only lists indexable, canonical URLs.
  • Track rankings for your priority keywords with a rank checker.
  • Read Google Search Essentials, especially the spam policies, so you know what to avoid.

2. Technical SEO

  • The whole site loads over HTTPS, with no mixed-content warnings.
  • One preferred version of the domain (www or non-www) – the others redirect with a 301.
  • robots.txt does not block important pages, CSS or JavaScript.
  • Important pages return status 200 and are not set to noindex; the Pages report in Search Console shows no unexpected exclusions.
  • No broken internal links or redirect chains; removed pages redirect to their closest replacement.
  • Canonical tags point to the correct URL and duplicate pages are consolidated.
  • Core Web Vitals pass for mobile: LCP 2.5 seconds or less, INP 200 ms or less, CLS 0.1 or less.
  • The site works fully on mobile – menus, forms and buttons included.
  • Structured data is valid (schema markup guide).
  • Multilingual sites use correct hreflang (hreflang guide).

3. On-Page SEO

  • Each page targets one clear topic based on keyword research, with no two pages competing for the same search.
  • Unique title tag (roughly 50–60 characters) and meta description for every page (meta tags guide).
  • Exactly one descriptive H1 and a logical H2/H3 structure (header tags guide).
  • Short, readable URLs that describe the page.
  • Images are compressed, have descriptive file names and alt text.
  • Internal links connect related pages using descriptive anchor text.
  • Breadcrumbs help users and search engines understand hierarchy (breadcrumbs guide).

4. Content Quality and E-E-A-T

  • Content answers the searcher’s question fully and better than the pages currently ranking.
  • It shows first-hand experience: real examples, data, photos or case studies.
  • Authors are named, with a bio that shows relevant expertise.
  • Facts are accurate, sourced where it matters, and pages show when they were last updated.
  • Thin, outdated or duplicate pages are improved, merged or removed.
  • Your business details – who you are, how to contact you, legal information – are easy to find.

Google’s guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content describes these signals, summarised as E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. See also writing for SEO and SEO content strategy.

5. Local SEO

  • Google Business Profile is claimed, verified and complete, with the right categories, hours and photos.
  • Name, address and phone number (NAP) are identical everywhere – check with our NAP checker.
  • You ask for and reply to reviews.
  • Location pages exist for each area you serve, with genuinely local content.

Read the full local SEO Malta guide.

  • Review your backlink profile with a backlink checker.
  • Earn links with content and relationships, not paid link schemes (white-hat link building).
  • Get listed in relevant, reputable industry and local directories.
  • Reclaim unlinked brand mentions and fix links to broken pages.

Our link building checklist goes deeper.

7. AI Search and GEO

  • Key pages answer common questions clearly, in the first lines of each section.
  • Your brand, services and location are described consistently across your site and profiles.
  • robots.txt reflects a deliberate decision about which AI crawlers may access your site.
  • You monitor whether AI assistants mention and cite your brand.

8. Ongoing Maintenance

  • Weekly: check Search Console for new errors and sudden traffic changes.
  • Monthly: review rankings, conversions, new backlinks and content performance.
  • Quarterly: refresh important content and crawl the site for technical issues.
  • Yearly: run a full SEO audit and update your keyword research.

Key Takeaways

  • Fix setup and technical problems first – they block everything else.
  • One page per topic, with clear titles, headings and internal links.
  • Show real experience and expertise; keep facts accurate and up to date.
  • Treat SEO as a routine, not a one-off project.

Frequently Asked Questions about SEO Checklists

What should an SEO checklist include?

Setup and tracking, technical health, on-page optimisation, content quality and E-E-A-T, local SEO, links and authority, AI search readiness and a routine for ongoing maintenance.

Which part of the checklist should I do first?

Setup and technical SEO. If pages cannot be crawled, indexed or loaded quickly on mobile, improvements to content and links will have limited effect.

How often should I go through an SEO checklist?

Check the basics monthly, crawl your site quarterly and run a full audit at least once a year or after any redesign or migration.

Is a checklist enough to rank?

It removes the obstacles, but rankings also depend on competition, the quality of your content and your authority. A checklist is the foundation, not the whole strategy.

What are the current Core Web Vitals thresholds?

Google considers LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less to be good, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads.

Can SEO-Malta audit my site against this checklist?

Yes. Our audits cover every section in depth and come with a prioritised action plan. Book a free call to discuss your site.
