Keyword Research That Finds Customers, Not Just Traffic

Keyword research tells you what your customers type into Google, how many of them search, and what they expect to find. Done well, it decides which pages you build and which ones you never waste time on. Here is how we do it at SEO-Malta – and how you can too.

Keyword research is the process of finding the words and questions people use in search engines, judging which of them are worth targeting, and deciding which page on your site should answer each one. It is the foundation of every SEO strategy, because even a perfectly optimised page will not bring business if it targets searches nobody makes – or searches made by people who will never buy.

Why Does Search Intent Matter More Than Volume?

Every search has a purpose. Broadly, intent falls into four groups:

  • Informational – the searcher wants to learn: “what is technical SEO”.
  • Commercial investigation – they are comparing options: “best SEO companies in Malta”.
  • Transactional – they are ready to act: “SEO audit price”.
  • Navigational – they want a specific site or brand.

Google ranks pages that match the dominant intent, so the quickest way to check is to search the keyword yourself and look at what already ranks. If the first page is full of guides, a sales page will struggle; if it is full of service pages, a blog post will struggle. A keyword with 50 monthly searches and strong buying intent is often worth more than one with 5,000 searches from people who only want a definition.

How Do You Do Keyword Research, Step by Step?

  1. Start with your business. List your products, services, locations and the problems you solve, in your customers’ words rather than your internal jargon.
  2. Expand the list. Use Google autocomplete, “People also ask”, related searches, Search Console queries you already appear for, and a keyword tool to find variations and questions.
  3. Check demand. Look at estimated monthly searches and trends. Treat all volume figures as estimates; tools disagree, and Google Trends helps you see seasonality.
  4. Classify intent for each keyword using the groups above.
  5. Assess difficulty. Look at who ranks: strong brands with many backlinks, or smaller sites you can realistically outrank?
  6. Group keywords into topics. Keywords that Google answers with the same results belong on one page.
  7. Map each group to a page – an existing page to improve or a new one to create – and prioritise by business value and effort.

What Is Keyword Mapping and Why Does It Prevent Cannibalisation?

Keyword mapping assigns each topic to exactly one URL. Without it, sites often end up with several pages competing for the same search – two service pages, a blog post and a category all half-targeting the same term – and Google cannot tell which one to rank. This is called keyword cannibalisation, and it usually leaves every competing page weaker than one strong page would be. A simple spreadsheet listing topic, main keyword, secondary keywords, intent and target URL is enough to prevent it, and it becomes the brief for your content strategy.

Keyword Research for the Maltese Market

Malta adds a few twists. The country is small – its population was 588,254 at the end of 2025 according to the National Statistics Office – so many local keywords show low or no volume in tools, even when real customers search for them. Don’t discard a keyword just because a tool says “0”; check Search Console and your own enquiries. Malta also has two official languages, Maltese and English, and most commercial searches happen in English, but Maltese place names (Ħamrun, Għargħur, Xagħra) are often typed without the special letters, so cover both spellings. Finally, Malta attracts millions of visitors a year – the NSO counted about 4 million inbound tourists in 2025 – so tourism businesses should research in the languages of their source markets, which is where multilingual SEO comes in. For location-based searches, combine this with local SEO.

Which Keyword Research Tools Should You Use?

You can start for free with Google Search Console (your real queries), Google autocomplete and related searches, Google Trends and our free keyword tool. Google Keyword Planner is free with an Ads account, but advertisers with low spend may only see broad volume ranges rather than exact figures. Paid suites such as Ahrefs or Semrush add competitor keyword data and difficulty scores; read our Ahrefs review and our overview of the best SEO tools before buying.

Yes, but the unit of research is shifting from single keywords towards topics and questions. AI answers in Google and chat assistants draw on pages that answer questions clearly and completely. Researching the full set of questions around a topic, and answering them in well-structured content, serves both classic rankings and AI search visibility (GEO).

Key Takeaways

  • Intent and business value matter more than raw search volume.
  • Group keywords into topics and map each topic to one page to avoid cannibalisation.
  • In Malta, low tool volumes are normal – validate with Search Console and real enquiries.
  • Research questions and topics, not just keywords, for AI search visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions about Keyword Research

What is keyword research?

It is the process of finding the words and questions your customers type into search engines, judging which are worth targeting based on intent, demand and difficulty, and deciding which page should answer each.

How many keywords should one page target?

One main topic per page, together with its close variations and related questions. If Google shows the same results for two keywords, they belong on the same page.

Why do keyword tools show zero volume for Malta searches?

Malta is a small market, so many local searches fall below the thresholds tools report. Check Google Search Console and your own enquiries before discarding a keyword.

Is Google Keyword Planner enough?

It is a useful free source, but low-spend accounts may only see volume ranges. Combine it with Search Console, autocomplete, Google Trends and a keyword tool.

How often should keyword research be updated?

Review it at least once a year, and whenever you launch new services, enter a new market or notice changes in Search Console.
